OWN HOUSING – COMPONENT SURVIVAL FOR IDPs (download brochure)
Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the city of Oleksandriia has become one of the most powerful centers for the reception of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in central part of Ukraine.
According to unofficial information, 80 thousand IDPs passed through the city and stopped for at least a day. As stated by official statistics, as of June 1, 2024, almost 10 thousand persons were registered in the community. This is more than 11 % of the population living in the community.
The city is located at the crossroads of highways from Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih. Therefore, the first month of the war was the most difficult, when the flow of cars was so great that they were moving at a speed of 20-30 km/h. People spent the night simply on the floor in the schools, gyms and cultural centers.
Gradually, part of the people stayed because they had no opportunity to go further and the western regions were also overcrowded with refugees.
Today, there are 6 places of temporary residence for IDPs in Oleksandriia (4 kindergartens and 2 dormitories), in which 140 people live.
Assistance in the arrangement of such centers was provided by our international partners: USAID, UNICEF, ACTED, “People in Need”, GIZ. With their help, furniture and equipment were purchased; furthermore conditions have been created for better living of people.
The vast majority of IDPs live in rented accommodation.
However, recently there has been a trend when people are forced to return to frontline cities such as Kramatorsk, Sloviansk and others, because they do not have funds to rent housing. Even worse cases are when people return to temporarily occupied territories because of the fact that Russia, for example, in Mariupol is building blocks of high-rise buildings for residents of Vuhledar.
It is extremely important for us that Ukrainians remain in safe conditions in Ukrainian cities and villages.
The city authorities, together with international partners and the public sector, are making huge efforts to improve the living conditions of people in the community.
The main issues that concern people are housing and work.
The only chance for such people to get housing in Oleksandriia is the construction of a new one or the reconstruction of an existing one.
The city has several building plots that could be used for the construction of one- and multi- story buildings.

As of April 1, 2024, they have increased to 4325 and 2225 people, respectively, of which 77 were IDPs – IEs, also 20 enterprises have been relocated from the area of hostilities.
Most IEs and small and medium-sized enterprises work in the service and trade sector.
The increase in the number of entrepreneurs made it possible to additionally attract about 347.1 thousand euro to the budget in 2024 which is twice as much as in the corresponding period of 2023.
